Council officers have confirmed that some changes into the disability access for one Oxford library are imminent. The positive move will make it easier for anyone with mobility problems, wheelchair users and mother’s with prams to access the popular library located in Bury Knowle House.

Current Access is Unacceptable

Currently the Oxfordshire library can only be accessed by stairs. This means anyone who cannot get up the stairs is unable to make use of the library services. The County Council has had planning permission in place to install a brand new lift and a disabled toilet for the last three years, however they have not carried out any of the work as yet.
The three year delay caused outrage in disability campaigners in the area as well as mothers and fathers who wish to access the library with their children in prams or pushchairs. The groups have criticised the time it has taken to act on the proposed planning permission. Martin Crabtree from the council spoke to the press stating that the reason for the delay was a review carried out on the entire library service provided by the council.

Opening the Library to All Members of the Public

The costs of the installation of the lift into the Grade II listed building have not been discoleseed but local residents will be looking forward to the improvements. Adding a lift will mean everyone can access the public service library, it’s a positive move even if it has been three years in the making.
The consultants at Direct Access Consultancy are able to help all home and business owners, including the council with their proposed disability access alterations. An access statement is the ideal way of helping you plan the changes and you’ll also receive planning permission support. You’ll learn about the costs involved and the consultants will work hard to make sure you stay on budget.
Talk to the access statement consultants by emailing steven@accessdda.com or telephoning 0845 056 4421.
